Changed jobs in Japan?
Is your visa still OK?

Many foreign workers don't realise that changing jobs can affect their visa status.
You may need to notify immigration, change your visa category, or renew early.
We'll check your situation and handle the paperwork — in English, on weekends.

⚠️ Did you know? You have 14 days to notify immigration after changing jobs.
If you have a work visa (e.g. Engineer/Specialist in Humanities, Skilled Worker), you are required to notify the immigration bureau within 14 days of leaving your old job or starting a new one.
Failing to notify can affect your next visa renewal — or in serious cases, your ability to stay in Japan.

Which of these sounds like you?

Changed jobs — same type of work
e.g. moved from one IT company to another. Your visa category is probably fine, but you still need to file a notification.

Changed jobs — different type of work
e.g. used to do office work, now working in sales or management. Your current visa may not cover your new job.
Status Change May Be Needed
🏢
Became self-employed or started a company
Your current work visa doesn't cover self-employment. You may need to change to a Business Manager visa.

Visa renewal is coming up soon

How we help you

01
Check your current visa status
We review your current visa category, your new job description, and check whether a notification or status change is needed. Most people find out in the first consultation.
02
File the job change notification (if needed)
We prepare and submit the 14-day job change notification to the immigration bureau on your behalf. As a registered immigration lawyer, we can submit without you going to the immigration office.
03
Change your visa category (if needed)
If your new job doesn't match your current visa, we prepare and file a "Change of Status of Residence" application. We handle all documents in both English and Japanese.
04
Renew your visa
Once your status is correct, we handle the full renewal process. You don't need to go to the immigration office — we submit everything on your behalf.

After a job change — what do you need to do?

📋
Did you notify immigration within 14 days of your job change?
If no → File the notification as soon as possible. Late notification can affect your renewal.
🔍
Does your new job match your current visa category?
If unsure → Book a consultation. We'll check your job description against your visa. This is the most common issue we see.
📅
Is your visa expiring within the next 3 months?
If yes → Start the renewal process now. Applications take 1–3 months to process. Don't wait.
🏢
Are you now self-employed or running your own business?
If yes → Your current work visa likely doesn't cover this. You may need to change to a Business Manager visa. Contact us immediately.

Frequently asked questions

I changed jobs 3 months ago and didn't notify immigration. What happens?
You should still file the notification — late is better than never. While there is technically a penalty for not notifying, immigration officers generally take the overall situation into account. The bigger risk is at your next renewal, where not notifying can raise red flags. Book a consultation and we'll advise on the best way forward.
My job title is different but I'm doing similar work. Do I need to change my visa?
It depends on the actual duties, not just the title. Immigration cares about what you actually do day-to-day. If the core activities are the same (e.g. engineering, IT, business administration), your visa may be fine. If the nature of work has significantly changed, you may need a status change. We can review your specific situation in a consultation.
Can you submit applications without me going to the immigration office?
Yes. As a registered immigration lawyer (申請取次行政書士), we are authorised to submit applications on your behalf. You do not need to visit the immigration bureau. All communication is done online, and we update you on progress throughout the process.
Do you offer consultations in English?
Yes. Consultations are available in English via Zoom, LINE, or email. Written documents are prepared in Japanese for submission, but we explain everything to you in English throughout the process.
Are you available on weekends?
Yes — Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays are our main available days. We understand that many working professionals can't take time off for consultations. Online appointments are available via LINE or Zoom.
I'm based outside Kanagawa. Can you still help?
Yes. All of our services are available online nationwide. We work with clients across Japan — you don't need to be in Kanagawa or visit our office.
